What the Boiler Upgrade Scheme Is and Who Can Benefit

The vision of the UK government to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2050 has helped revolutionize the UK’s domestic energy market. At its center of this revolution is the Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS), an important scheme that’s making low-carbon heating an affordable reality like never before. If you are a homeowner in the UK thinking of making the transition from your current boiler to a greener, more efficient heating system, this guide will lead you through everything you need to understand about the Boiler Upgrade Scheme and how it can benefit your home.

Understanding the Boiler Upgrade Scheme

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme is a massive government scheme launched in April 2022 as part of the UK’s ground-breaking Heat and Buildings Strategy. With a £450 million budget available until 2028, the scheme represents one of the largest investments in domestic heating decarbonisation. The policy works on a straightforward but efficient basis, which is offering grants to homeowners who opt to replace their current fossil fuel-based heating systems with new low-carbon heat alternatives. Instead of making loans or intricate finance arrangements, the BUS works on the basis of simple grants that lower the installation cost of qualifying homes.

What is especially attractive about this plan is its installer-le strategy, that means that homeowners do not have to organize it themselves through complicated application forms. Rather, trained and approved installers, like ECO Boiler Grants, perform the whole grant application for homeowners so the transition to cleaner heating is as hassle-free as possible.

Grants up to £7,500: What You Can Claim Under the Boiler Upgrade Scheme

The grant currently available through the Boiler Upgrade Scheme provides significant funding for householders willing to make the transition to low-carbon heating:

Who is Eligible for the BUS (Boiler Upgrade Scheme)

Eligibility for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme is broad but focuses on properties that will gain most benefit from low-carbon heating upgrades.

Basic Eligibility Criteria

  • Be the Homeowner
  • Be replacing an existing fossil fuel heating system such as gas, oil, LPG, or electric heating
  • Hold a current, valid Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) which is no more than 10 years old ( We can help you get an EPC rating if you meet other eligibility requirements).

Property Requirements

The scheme will be available to domestic and non-domestic property in England and Wales with a maximum single system installation capacity of 45kWth. This is the highest of the capacity for most UK dwellings, so most properties qualify for the scheme.

Particularly, the government has removed past limitations that made the scheme inaccessible. Insulation targets were removed for installations commissioned from May 2024 onwards, so homes are no longer required to have loft or cavity wall insulation installed before being granted permission for a heat pump. This has opened the scheme up to thousands more homeowners.

With grants worth £ 7,500 for ground and air source heat pumps, and £5,000 for biomass boilers, BUS offers a great financial advantage, helping lower your energy bills for years to come, while keeping your home warmer and healthier.
